- 简介：
- 美国和联邦德国联合研制MBT-70主战坦克于1969年底搁浅。随后美国在MBT-70基础上开始研制新的XM803坦克，但仍因结构复杂，成本过高，又于1971年底被国会否决。在两个计划被相继取消后，美国陆军随即于1971年展开研制XM1坦克的计划。1973年6月陆军分别与通用和克莱斯勒两大公司签订了研制样车合同。两公司均于1976年初推出一辆原型车，经测试与评估，克莱斯勒的设计中选。为纪念原陆军参谋长，二次大战中著名的装甲部队司令格雷夫顿W·艾布拉姆斯(Greighton W.Abrams)将军，特把该坦克命名为"艾布拉姆斯"主战坦克。
